Simple SwiftUI + CoreData app

Overview

Footnote

Hello! Before you interact with this repository, please check out our Code of Conduct and Contributing Guidelines.

Footnote is a SwiftUI + Core Data app that I initially created as a personal learning project. Now, I'm open sourcing it as part of Hacktoberfest 2020. This project is specifically intended to support junior developers and developers who are new to SwiftUI and/or Open Source Software.

What the hell is open source?

This project is intended to be a place for beginners to learn what open source software is about. Terminology and jargon can be a barrier for many people new to open source software. A wonderful guide to all things open source can be found at opensource.guide. Please don't hesitate to reach out via email at [email protected], or twitter @cameronbardell. This is also my first time as a maintainer, so if you have any suggestions of how I can better facilitate this project, let me know.

Will my work be on the App Store? Will I get credited?

Yes and yes. The current version of the app is on the App Store here. At the end of October, I'll submit version 2.0 with all the changes made during Hacktoberfest, and a contributors page with a link to the GitHub profile of everyone who helped out, with code or otherwise.

I have a feature request/bug report/question

Either create an issue, or contact me with the methods listed above. You can't do anything wrong that can't be easily fixed (that's the magic of git and github) so don't hesitate!

  • Adding a Onboarding Screen for new users and new updates.

Adding a Onboarding Screen for new users and new updates.

I tried to achieve the feature, mentioned in #25

Onboarding is shown only once when the app is installed for the first time or has got a new update. I have also added an Image, when there are no quotes (Footnotes) added.

    | Onboarding Screen - Light Mode | Empty Quotes State - Light Mode | Onboarding Screen- Dark Mode | Empty Quotes State - Dark Mode | |---|---|---|---| |Simulator Screen Shot - iPhone 11 Pro - 2020-10-01 at 14 25 15| Simulator Screen Shot - iPhone 11 Pro - 2020-10-01 at 17 07 01|Simulator Screen Shot - iPhone 11 Pro - 2020-10-01 at 14 25 23|Simulator Screen Shot - iPhone 11 Pro - 2020-10-01 at 17 07 04|

To view onboarding in action: Go To Project Navigator > Footnote > Target (Footnote) > Change Version to 1.03.1 etc and run the app.

    Known Issue:

I created an additional sheet modifier for viewing the onboarding. Since it was causing problems with AddQuoteView Sheet ie: AddQuoteView was not opening.

Workaround: I had commented the enum which change the modal views. Instead added a sheet modifier to the button as workaround.

I have one feedback on the codebase, ie: Readability can be improved. Waiting for the feedbacks and suggestions.

    Export to social media.

Currently, quotes can be exported and saved to the photo library. This feature would be more useful if it supported export to social media, mostly likely Twitter and Instagram.

Text in textfield not visible in dark mode

Describe the bug The text in 3 textfields do not change color when changed to dark mode. The text becomes invisible to the user in dark mode.

To Reproduce Steps to reproduce the behavior:

    1. Go to add quote screen
    2. Click on text textfield
    3. Type the text, the color of the text is white which prevents it from being visible to the user.

  • Support for different types of media

Support for different types of media

The current author, title, quote setup only corresponds to books. When creating a quote, it should be possible to select different media types such as podcasts, movies, tv shows, etc.

I've labeled this as "good first issue" for now, but since this requires changes across a large part of the app, it may be better for more experienced contributors, or should be split up into smaller problems.

Replacing present search bar by a native, pull down to search style search bar

Hi, I found a way to implement a native search bar in SwiftUI which hides the search bar until the view is pulled down, mimicking the behavior found commonly in iOS like in spotlight and the settings app. Should be a nice replacement, let me know what you think.

  • Add a setting for changing the colour theme.

Add a setting for changing the colour theme.

Global setting for change the default colour from red.

    Implementing this feature would require:

    • Adding a list of nice looking colours.
    • Adding a global environment var with the user's selected colour, and saving. Probably in UserDefaults
    • Changing all colour modifiers to the global var.
