View your app on different device and font sizes

Overview

Version Swift 5.2 iOS 10.0+ Cartage codecov Bitrise License

Sizes reduces the time it takes to evaluate all of our apps possible device sizes, orientations and font combinations. With Sizes we'll avoid launching all the supported devices simulator, running our app and navigating through each screen manually which not only takes a lot of time but its also highly error prone since we sometimes forget to test one particular combination and we ship a screen with a layout bug to the App Store.

⚠️ Sizes deprecation recommendation

Xcode 11 introduced Previews which is a fantastic way to quickly validate your UI in multiple scenarios just like Sizes did. If you'd like to know more about Xcode Previews I recommend this WWDC session. You can even use Previews with UIKit so there's no reason to stick to this library.

This library will be deprecated and the repo will be archived in the future.

📱 Sizes in action

Recorded on an 10.5 inch iPad Pro

Sizes was created as a port of Brandon Williams and Stephen Celis in Playgrounds for the Kickstarter iOS app and further explained in PointFree to iOS. Make sure to check their site out!

🌟 Features

  • Inspect your app in multiple device sizes
  • Switch orientations
  • Test all font sizes
  • Universal (iPhone & iPad)

💡 Demo

To run the demo project, clone the repo and run Sizes target.

📲 Installation

Using CocoaPods

Edit your Podfile and specify the dependency:

pod 'Sizes'

Using Carthage

👩‍💻 How to use

Preparations

Sizes require you to use Auto Layout in order to update the UI correctly with each change.

For font updates you'll need to use Dynamic Type.

Programmatically:

let label = UILabel()
label.font = UIFont.preferredFont(forTextStyle: .headline, compatibleWith: traitCollection)
label.adjustsFontForContentSizeCategory = true

IB/Storyboard:

Setup

I highly recommend you only use this while on #DEBUG mode.

The best way to setup Sizes is to use the SizesWindow as your AppDelegates' window. This will automatically make a SizesViewController instance contain your apps root view controller and you'll still be able to use code like UIApplication.shared.windows.first?.rootViewController as? YourInitialCustomViewController with no issues.

func application(_ application: UIApplication, didFinishLaunchingWithOptions launchOptions: [UIApplication.LaunchOptionsKey: Any]?) -> Bool {
    #if DEBUG
        window = SizesWindow()
        window?.rootViewController = UIStoryboard(name: "Main", bundle: nil).instantiateInitialViewController()!
        window?.makeKeyAndVisible()
    #endif
    return true
}

Usage

Shake to display the Sizes configuration UI, then tap on one of the orientation/device options to trigger a change. Or update the Text size slider to navigate through the different font sizes, you'll get the font name as you slide. You can check a longer video implementation and some of the use cases of Sizes in this tweet

  • Save a screenshot of the current layout

    Save a screenshot of the current layout

    We could add a 'take screenshot' button that generates a UIImage from the containedView and displays the share sheet so we can save/share the image of the current layout in full size.

    Ideally, we can let users select if they want to place a label with the current device/orientation/font size on the generated image though this is not a priority.

    Current situation when taking a screenshot when using Sizes on an iPad testing small phones layouts:

    Changing SizesWindow's rootViewController after initial setup doesn't remove the old child view

    Expected Behavior

    Only ViewB should be on screen.

    Actual Behavior

    ViewA is on screen on top of ViewB.

    Steps to Reproduce the Problem

    1. Set SizesWindow as app window in AppDelegate
    2. Set the root view controller of the window to ViewControllerA
    3. Later on in the app, change the root view controller of the window to ViewControllerB
    4. Observe that both ViewA and ViewB are on screen

  • Add SizesWindow

    Add SizesWindow

    I've tried overriding get and set for rootViewController property but it breaks UIKit, I get the error:

    Applications are expected to have a root view controller at the end of application launch Although I can correctly retrieve the rootViewController. I believe overriding set breaks UIKit. You can see the said approach in commit 8feaa4a And overriding get without overriding set does not seem possible.

    I've also bumped up the version to 0.3 and configured AppDelegate to use the new SizesWindow approach. All tests pass.

    Sizes Configuration Panel hides for good, meaning the project has to be rerun to test fully on all device sizes

    Once dismissed there should be a way to get the configuration panel back onto the screen, potentially using the same swiping gesture that was used to dismiss it.

    What actually happens is that there is no way to get the panel back onto the screen, which means I have to run the that app multiple times to test thoroughly on different devices.

    If there is a way to solve this I cannot find anything in the documentation of the existing/closed issues.

    1. Setup sizes in your project the way that the documentation states (using a SizesWindow)
    2. Hide the configuration panel by swiping down on it
    3. Attempt to swipe it back up or show it again in any way you can imagine.

    Improve Sizes configuration/simulated view placement

    When using Sizes on iPads, even when there's whitespace around the ViewController to be used, configuration view covers the view controller. An ability to move the view controller freely, or at least snapping it to top would allow the user the see the whole view controller, without Sizes covering it.

  • Safe area is inherited from the device running Sizes

    Safe area is inherited from the device running Sizes

    Expected Behavior

    When the size is changed to a new device, the view controller should have the same safe area that it would have if it were running on that device.

    Actual Behavior

    When the size is changed to a new device, the safe area does not change.

    Steps to Reproduce the Problem

    1. Run Sizes on an iPhone 8 Plus
    2. Select Readme
    3. The safe area is small (ok)
    4. Change size to iPhone Xs
    5. The safe area remains small (not ok)
    6. For contrast, you can run Sizes on an iPhone Xs and see the difference:

  • Automatically evaluate layout issues

    Automatically evaluate layout issues

    This is more of an experimental feature. After getting #2 done we should be able to analyze each view frame and its hierarchy and evaluate if the device/orientation/font change created a layout issue (for example a label's frame going beyond its super view frame when not in a scroll view).

    Again, this is an experimental feature and any help/recommendation/opinions are highly appreciated.

  • Add screenshot based testing example using Sizes

    Add screenshot based testing example using Sizes

    After adding #8 it would be nice to have an example of screenshot based testing with Sizes handling all the different device sizes and fonts. Ideally, we would have an iOSSnapshotTestCase extension for Sizes where we can call an action that evaluates the current screen on all supported devices.

    A new extra features Sizes was missing:

    • Scale the contained view when viewing larger devices.
    • Hide the orientation section if the app supports only one orientation type.
    • Set the devices available for your particular app.
    • Added accessibility identifiers to every element to run UITests with Sizes.
