Website and more info

TrackerZapper is a Mac app that sits in your menubar and silently removes tracking parameters from any links you copy.

Download from the releases page

You will get a warning about unidentified developer so you can either right-click > open, or attempt to open then open System Preferences > Security & Privacy then allow the app.

Requires MacOS Big Sur or later because I don't have anything else to test on. It might work, give it a go.

  • Unintended interactions with TextExpander snippet image expansion

Unintended interactions with TextExpander snippet image expansion

Happens when using TextExpander and TrackerZapper. TextExpander Version 7.2 TrackerZapper Version 1.1.1 macOS Version 12.3.1

When TrackerZapper is active and you are expanding a TextExpander snippet that contains both text and images, the text will display as intended but the images within that snippet are stripped out.

Disabling TrackerZapper restores the functionality to expanding images and text.

Menu bar icon arbitrarily disappears (but app is still working)

    Hello,

I noticed that TrackerZapper’s menu bar icon would sometimes disappear, but unfortunately I was not able to recognize any discernible pattern of its disappearance. The app is still working during the icon’s disappearance.

Here are some potentially relevant details about my setup:

    • Hardware: MacBook Pro 13 inch (2018)
    • OS: macOS Monterey 12.1(21C52)
    • TrackerZapper version: 1.1.1 (lastest as of writing)

  • Thank you!

    Thank you!

I've been removing utm and related parameters for years when I paste links into places, and I was literally just wondering the other day if there was a way to automate this. Thank you!

  • Fix for NSStatus Item not working correctly

Fix for NSStatus Item not working correctly

Hi, a status item shouldn't be created via NSStatusBar.init instead of NSStatusBar.system, using NSStatusBar.init it does not change screens correctly, and also prevents other menu bar item from ordering (via ⌘+dragging). Using NSStatusBar.system is correct and prevents this. The ultimate fix is for Apple to fix the bugs in using NSStatusBar.init but until this happens NSStatusBar.system should always be used.

Propose stripping "?scrolla" parameter as it probably functions as a tracker. You can find it in use on, e.g., the Verge, Jalopnik, etc. Here's an example link: https://www.theverge.com/2021/10/5/22711837/mark-zuckerberg-responds-to-facebook-whistleblower?scrolla=5eb6d68b7fedc32c19ef33b4

  • Handling Twitter tracking parameters

    Handling Twitter tracking parameters

    https://github.com/rknightuk/TrackerZapper/issues/13

Twitter uses really generic "s" and "t" parameters. They're really annoying. I've used a naïve way to remove them that doesn't break other sites that use those parameters for other things. The app should only remove them if the URL is a twitter link, otherwise leave them alone.

  • New York Times trackers

    New York Times trackers

A common thing I do is copy the url of an NYT article and search for it on Twitter... except the link always has trackers, which I manually remove. So this: https://www.nytimes.com/2022/02/03/opinion/eric-adams-biden.html?emc=edit_nn_20220203&nl=the-morning&te=1 should be this: https://www.nytimes.com/2022/02/03/opinion/eric-adams-biden.html

It seems track zapper doesn't do this... I wish I could do it myself and contribute, but I'm not an iOS dev
